Six months after my younger brother was born, my parents finally got a diagnosis for his cries and weird breathing.
He was asthmatic, and they had to rethink how our home was set up to ensure his triggers were lowered to zero if possible.
We all had to learn how to handle an inhaler if we needed to help him breathe. Meanwhile, our dad was busy sorting the indoor air quality in our home to remove triggers. We gave up our pets and pulled the woolen carpets, blankets, and everything else that would pick dirt and interfere with air quality. But that wasn’t enough, and we had the HVAC system checked for any damages. My parents had always kept the HVAC equipment well serviced, and apart from changing the air filter, they also had the HVAC technician do duct cleaning every year. My dad contacted the HVAC professional for their home service, and she recommended that the house be fitted with a whole home air purification system to ensure every pollutant was cleaned out. It was a bit expensive because I remember my dad asking if it would be enough to fit just the bedrooms with air purification units. Still, the technician told us that an air purification system in just part of the house would not be enough unless my brother stayed confined. Eventually, they had to use up their savings to get air purification help because my brother got worse during summer, mainly so that they wouldn’t ignore the need any longer. My brother got better as he grew older, with issues only rising when he got triggered away from home. At least he got that, and my parents also let up their overprotectiveness and let him learn to navigate the world away from the comfort of a smart HVAC system and every other safety feature they installed at home.
