My dad told me my buddy and I were going on a long fishing trip.
When mom didn’t come along, I was surprised, but I knew she was tied up getting ready for the new baby. We got to the cottage, and there was no air conditioning. I told dad my buddy and I needed to call the heating and A/C corporation, then dad told me air conditioning was not needed when fishing. The only true reason there was air conditioning was to make mom comfortable, since she didn’t go out on the lake. When my buddy and I got out on the lake, the sunlight shining on the water was hot. I asked dad if they had portable a/cs for boats, and he just simply stared at me. I wondered how I had made it through the first fifteen years with dad. I never knew he had such an aversion to me or air conditioning. When my buddy and I got back into the old cottage, I asked if my buddy and I could go home? He told me he wanted to do more fishing, but I wasn’t really going. I looked dad in the eye and told him I didn’t want to fish. It was extremely overheated as blazes in the cottage and it was hotter on the water. He told me he didn’t want to go home. Mom hadn’t been pregnant for sixteen years, and he didn’t know how to deal with her now. He said he needed to be away from the house for a few mornings. I was the chosen person to go with him, he hated the cottage without air conditioning, and there was nowhere else to go. I started to laugh and looked at him. I said, ‘so it isn’t me you dislike?’ and he started laughing with me. He said I was the only one he liked right now.
