On TV everything seems so easy, then from computer hacking to catching criminals, from painting to skydiving, when you watch things on cable it feels like you could do them just as well.
Is that just me, or do you do that too? I have been enjoying a lot of home renovation shows, or programs about apartment flipping, and I started to think it was something I could handle.
It only took one day of actual renovation labor before I realized I was in over my head. I was pretty handy around the house, despite the fact that I wasn’t a plumber, an A/C maintenance tech, an electrician, or a roofing dealer, what seemed to be so easy on TV was virtually impossible in reality. I got up on top of the apartment and started looking around for weak spots or indentations in the roofing, to indicate disfigurement underneath. I found more problems with the roofing than I could have ever imagined. I had to be careful with every step I took, because the roof was so badly in need of extensive repairs. I did a little online research, and found three different roofing dealers in my part that handled residential roofs, but only two of them gave a free price quote for roof replacement, so those were the two I made appointments with. One of these roofing companies was a family owned and operated business, with a man, his wife, and their three sons. I chose this family-run roofing business because they seemed eager to work, and they gave me a wonderful price estimate.
