Heating our Old House

Our house is over one hundred years old, and it can be a pain sometimes.

My husband, Todd, and I bought the house when we were first married, and it was my dream come true.

I’ve always wanted to live in an older house. I think they have so much more character that the modern ones that most of my family live in. After living in our home for only a couple short years, I realized that living in and old house wasn’t all that I thought that it would be. Don’t get me wrong, it is a beautiful house, and it does have a lot of character, but it also has a lot of problems. We’ve had multiple leaks in the bathroom and kitchen. We’ve had some electrical issues and actually decided to get the entire house rewired. By far, the biggest trouble we’ve had is trying to heat the place in the winter time. There was an old wood burning stove there when we bought the house, but it has since bit the dust. Thankfully, the house isn’t that big, so we at least have that going for us. We ended up purchasing three electric fireplaces. One for the living room, one for the dining room/kitchen, and one for our bedroom. They seem to do a pretty good job of keeping the house warm in the winter months. The temperatures rarely drop below forty where we are at, so the fireplaces are able to keep up. As long as we can keep the drafty windows and doors covered, our house stays nice and cozy during even the coldest winter nights. I love our old house, but man, it has been a lot of work to keep it heated.
