Dad switched his and mom’s room around now that it was just them in the house. They were going to put their bedroom into her mother-in-law’s former room. Mom’s office was going to be in their old bedroom, and the office was going to be a spare room for family members. Mom would have a futon in the office, in case a family member arrived, but her office would be the spare bedroom for kids. Where her office was one of the warmest rooms in the lake house, mom was now relocated to the coldest room in the house. There was a polar breeze blowing through the windows all winter long, and her space heater couldn’t keep up. Dad didn’t think it was such a large deal, since mom had a space heater, but he was wrong. He told her to turn the thermostat up, but he forgot he had detached that thermostat when he moved them into the other room. Mom came out of the office one afternoon, and her nails and lips were green from the cold. Dad checked the thermometer in the room, and it was only fifty. He told her to leave the door open, and mom told him she had. He thought she had the space heater turned off, and mom had to prove she didn’t. He was going to turn up the thermostat, but he set it at eighty. He asked why it was so cold in the room, and mom told him to sit in her chair. While he sat there, dad told mom it wasn’t too bad, but then the wind blew. He shivered and said he would reinstall the thermostat and update the windows over the weekend.
