Times are changing right before our eyes. If you grew up in the 90s like we did, chances are, you’ll have some of the same experiences that we had. Cell Phones weren’t a thing for us back then, our game systems were nowhere as advanced as the ones today, and having a cooling system at home or at school was a luxury. We lived in a major metropolitan city and our school was built back in the 1920s, which was before central air conditioners were widely used in the 1960s. So, we went to a school that only had air conditioning on certain sites and several of the classrooms weren’t part of those spaces. Our labs had air conditioning and so did some of the offices in the building. Window air conditioners were installed in those areas. We don’t recall us ever being too uncomfortable while in the fall semester. Then again, the weather wasn’t nearly as warm as it is now. We got out of school in early June, which was before the beginning of the Summer season. Now, we don’t imagine that our high school has a central air conditioner as it would cost millions of dollars in renovations to try to install HVAC duct throughout the old building. We think after the pandemic, there were talks of schools receiving the money needed to complete the central air conditioner replacement, but we are not sure of the status of that issue. Most kids today who are going to school in other parts of the country have never known life without a central air conditioner. And they have no clue how much of a luxury it is because there are still several schools with no cooling systems.
