When Bianca’s mom moved closer to grandpa, she had to rent a beach house in the area.
It was an older house, but they were 4 doors away from grandpa.
Bianca couldn’t believe how beat up it was inside, but her mom said they would only stay for a couple of weeks, or until she could talk grandpa into moving back home with them. Grandma had passed away over the summer, and Bianca’s mom didn’t want grandpa living alone through the winter. The first thing she did was have an HVAC worker look at the HVAC unit in the beach house. After a cursory inspection, the HVAC worker told her to have fun with the furnace. Bianca asked her mom what he meant by that, and she told her the furnace was for burning wood or coal. There was no way to use it with heating fuel, and the heat was all gravity fed. Bianca asked if it was a safe furnace, and her mom said yes. She also told her that unless they had a nice source of wood, it would be excessive work and money to keep enough wood around to heat the ancient house. Bianca asked if she expected to be in the home over winter, and her mom said she hoped not. She loved grandpa and knew he could be stubborn, but she hoped this time he would just agree to come home with them. Bianca’s mom was right about his being stubborn, but her hopes were for naught. Her grandpa dug his heels in, and he refused to leave. Her mom had to use that natty old furnace for the entire winter until Bianca’s grandpa said he was ready to leave his home.
