When Jim’s dad moved closer to his grandma, he had to get a new house.
It was new to them, but it was an older cabin.
They were 5 doors away from grandma, but the home was ancient. Jim was astonished at how beat up it was inside, but his dad said they would only stay for a month, or until he could talk grandma into moving back home with them. Grandfather had passed away over the summer, and Jim’s dad didn’t want grandma living alone through the winter. The first thing dad did was have a Heating & Air Conditioning professional look at the Heating & Air Conditioning plan in the cabin. After a cursory inspection, the Heating & Air Conditioning professional told Jim’s dad to have fun with the furnace. Jim asked his dad what he meant by that, and his dad told him the furnace was for burning wood or coal. There was no way to use it with heating fuel, and the heat was all gravity fed. Jim wanted to know if it was a safe heating system, and his dad said yes. Then he also told Jim that unless you had a good source of wood, it would be strenuous to keep enough wood around to heat the old house. Jim asked if he expected to be in the home over winter, and his dad said he hoped not. He loved Jim’s grandma and knew she could be stubborn, but he hoped this time she would just agree to come home with them. Jim’s dad was right about her being stubborn, but his hopes were for naught. She dug her heels in, and she refused to leave. Jim’s dad had to use that old furnace for the entire winter until grandma said she was ready to leave her home.
