They say that teaching is a noble profession.
- I used to feel that way, but after 20 years, my feelings have definitely changed.
Most days I feel like I am just going through the motions and none of my students, or their parents, appreciate the education that I am providing. I started thinking the other day about other jobs and things that are taken for granted and underappreciated. People just assume that they are always going to be there and do their job no matter what. How would my students and other faculty members feel if I just stopped teaching halfway through the year? The one thing that came to mind that I feel is just as unappreciated is the HVAC system in our workplaces in our homes. Most people just assume that they will always be there, doing their job, until they aren’t. Many people forget to even have them serviced on a regular basis and then get upset when they break. If they had simply taken the time to appreciate the fact that these systems work hard day in and day out they probably wouldn’t have had an issue to begin with. I never thought I would sympathize with an inanimate object like an HVAC system or likin myself to how it is treated. I guess inspiration can come from the strangest of area sometimes. I may have my students write reports on an inanimate object that relates to their feelings and see what they come up with. Who knows, maybe it will allow them to look at people and objects with a more understanding eye.
