They say that teaching is a noble profession; I used to feel that way, however after 20 years, my feelings have certainly changed.
Most mornings I feel like I am just going through the motions and none of my students, or their parents, care about the education that I am providing.
I started thinking the other day about other tasks and things that are taken for granted and underappreciated… People just believe that they are always going to be there and do their task no matter what, but how would my students and other faculty members feel if I just stopped teaching halfway through the year? The one thing that came to mind that I feel is just as unappreciated is the Heating and Air Conditioning system in our workplaces in our homes. Most people just believe that they will always be there, doing their task, until they aren’t. Many people forget to even have them maintained on a regular basis and then get anxious when they break. If they had simply taken the time to care about the fact that these systems work hard day in and day out they actually wouldn’t have had an issue to begin with. I never thought I would sympathize with an inanimate object like an Heating and Air Conditioning system or likin myself to how it is treated. I know inspiration can come from the strangest of section periodically. I may have my students write reports on an inanimate object that relates to their feelings and see what they come up with. Who knows, maybe it will allow them to look at people and objects with a more understanding eye.
